Six creamware dessert plates from the 'Baltic Set Dinner Service', circa 1802 Enamelled with a border of oak leaves and acorns reserving panels inscribed 'Nelson', above blue ribbons inscribed 'the Glorious 1st of August' and 'the San Josef', each cavetto titled 'Aboukir' and '14th Feby', the centres with a fouled anchor, 'Nelson, 2nd April, Baltic', enclosed by a laurel wreath, 20.8cm diam (6) Footnotes: Provenance Probably Vice-Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson Probably Emma, Lady Hamilton Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery and Midlothian (1847-1929); at Dalmeny House Thence by descent Sotheby's London, 5 October 2005, lot 170 (part) The 'Baltic Set Dinner Service', as listed in the Trickey Inventory of circa 1813, included 41 dessert or 'pudding' plates, as well as many other plates for soup, dinner and cheese. These dessert plates will have been used alongside sauce tureens that could also be used for sugar and cream. These six plates later formed part of a large collection of Baltic creamware pieces acquired by Archibald Primrose, who briefly served as British Prime Minister between 1894-95.
