King George III at Weymouth: A rare South Staffordshire enamel patch box, circa 1800 Painted with 'His Majesty Visiting the Sailors at WEYMOUTH', King George in fine regalia astride his horse greeting joyous sailors with arms raised aboard a ship hove to, within a blue, white and gilt zig-zag border, the white base with raised enamel dots, a mirror to the interior lid, 5cm wide Footnotes: King George III first visited Weymouth in 1789, believing the sea bathing would improve his health. The Royal family returned on many subsequent occasions, George's final visit being in 1805. One such occasion is recorded in a painting by John Thomas Serres in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. The King's grey horse may represent Adonis, purportedly George's favourite charger.
