Two white felspathic stoneware teapots and covers and a milk jug, circa 1800-20 Elaborately moulded with shell and leaf details picked out in blue enamel, the oval teapot commemorating Trafalgar, shells to each side moulded with Fame and Britannia by an obelisk inscribed 'PRO PATRIA', Fame's inscribing her tablet 'NELSON OCT...', the reverse with trophies of war below a banner proclaiming 'TRAFALGAR', the crocodile and Egyptian pyramid recalling Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile, the second teapot of octagonal section, with similar decoration set against brown enamel roundels, Fame's tablet reading 'HOWE' and 'NELSON' and the banner above trophies reading 'PATRIOTS', 24cm and 26cm long, the smaller lobed jug with similar moulding, further detail including a bird's head handle terminal picked out in enamel colours, 15cm long, impressed '27' (5) Footnotes: Although traditionally described as Castleford or Castleford-type, the manufacture of these wares is not straightforward, with few pieces being marked and designs and moulds evidently used by a number of factories.
