'Duncan Forever': Three South Staffordshire enamel patch boxes, circa 1800 Relating to Admiral Lord Duncan and the Battle of Camperdown, an upright oval example painted with a revelling sailor raising a toast to 'Duncan For Ever', 4.7cm long, the second box printed with a fouled anchor within laurels above 'Duncan and Victory', 4.3cm wide, the third example printed 'Glorious 11th Octr. English Valour Triumphant and Dutch Perfidy Defeated' within a painted border of husks and flowerheads, 5.3cm wide, with pale pink bases and mirrors to the interior (3) Footnotes: Born in Dundee, Scotland, Admiral Adam Duncan defeated the Dutch fleet off the coast of Camperduin on 11 October 1797. The British captured eleven enemy ships and lost none, effectively removing the Dutch from rest of the French Revolutionary War. However, enamel boxes commemorating Duncan and Camperdown are relatively scarce. One such example was sold by Bonhams on 23 April 2023, lot 91.
