A pair of engraved Nelson commemorative rummers, dated 1805 and 1806 with generous tall bucket bowls set on short knopped stems and heavy circular feet, one decorated with the HMS Victory in full sail, inscribed 'VICTORY' to the stern, the reverse inscribed 'LORD NELSON OCTR. 21 1805' within laurel branches, the other decorated with Nelson's catafalque inscribed 'TRAFALGAR', 'NILE' and 'VICTORY', the reverse inscribed 'LORD NELSON JANY. 9 1806' within a laurel branches, 20.5cm high (2) Footnotes: The dual significance of 21st October 1805 to the British public is represented in this pair of rummers. As a day of great victory but also loss, the nation simultaneously rejoiced and mourned their hero. In consequence, many wares were created to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar and the date of Nelson's state funeral just a few months later.
