A large felspathic stoneware tobacco jar and cover, dated 1810 The cylindrical body and the high domed cover each with three blue oval panels with applied white decoration including Britannia and Fame with a tablet marked 'HOWE' and 'NELSON', another with trophies of war piled underneath the Union flag and a banner reading 'PATRIOTS', a crocodile an Egyptian pyramid referencing the Battle of the Nile, other panels featuring the three Graces, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, inscribed and dated 'RH 1810' in scrolling black script, 19cm high (2) Footnotes: Provenance Phillips, 12 September 2001, lot 39 Similar patriotic applied decoration appears on a number of smear-glazed stoneware items marked 'J MIST LONDON'. James Mist was a pottery and glass merchant operating on Fleet Street during the last years of the Napoleonic Wars, circa 1809-1815.
