A GILT-BRONZE MINIATURE FIGURE OF VAJRADAKA 19th century The deity seated with legs apart on a lotus petal throne, adorned with a crown, elaborated jewellery, and a garland of skulls, the hands crossed at the wrist holding a vajra and a ghanta, gazing upwards with a compelling expression, a wide open mouth and bulging eyes, the base sealed. 5cm (2in) high. Footnotes: Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價 十九世紀 銅鎏金噉食空行母像 Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London 來源: 倫敦古董商 Ben Janssens Oriental Art Vajradaka is a deity of purification from the Vajradaka Tantra belonging to the larger category of the Chakrasamvara Cycle of Tantras. The present lot should be used as a ritual object, an incense burner, during specific meditative practices focused on purification. At a key moment in the meditation, black sesame seeds are placed into the mouth of the Vajradaka sculpture, passing through its body and dropping onto a pot of burning embers or coals. As the seeds burn, the rising smoke symbolizes the dissolution of the practitioner's impurities or sins, mirroring their destruction through the power of the ritual. Compare with a related gilt-bronze figure of Vajradaka, 18th century, which was sold at Sotheby's Paris, 14 June 2024, lot 11.
