The specific method involves first using a slanted knife to carve lines into the base to roughen the iron. Then, a thin sheet or line of gold is placed on the metal base and hammered so that the back of the gold is deeply embedded into the incised lines on the base. After smoothing and polishing, the surface of the metal forms a smooth and shiny gold or silver decoration.
