Wildlife Painting by Pip McGarry His Majesty Considered the largest of the big cats, the number of Amur Tigers in the wild is currently estimated to be between 300 and 500. In the 1940s, their numbers in the wild dropped to an estimated 50 individuals, but a ban on hunting in Russia helped increase their population. Not only is the Amur Tiger the largest of the big cats, it is also has the lightest coloured and thickest fur of any of the tiger species, due to the freezing cold and inhospitable temperatures of its habitat in the Siberian forests. This painting is oil upon canvas and is of a male Amur Tiger. Dimensions: 14 by 10 inches canvas, external measurements of frame: 16.5 by 18.5 inches Pip McGarry is recognised as one of the world's leading wildlife artists with an international reputation for his oil paintings of big cats and African game. In 2004, he was the subject of a highly successful Meridian Television series called 'A Brush With The Wild', in which Pip taught a number of celebrities such as Jenny Eclair, Nerys Hughes and Linda Robson how to paint wildlife, which he co-presented with Anneka Rice. Nearly 140 of Pip's paintings have been auctioned in the UK and internationally... and in May 2008, Pip's painting 'Flight of the Zebra sold at Christie's auction in London for £29,600 - still the highest price obtained at auction for a living British wildlife artist. Pip has had many limited and open edition prints published from his work, both in the UK and abroad. He has also had several tutorial DVD's produced and to date he has raised over £200,000 for animal conservation charities, including Marwell Wildlife, Lion Aid, DSWF and Animals Asia. www.pipmcgarry.com This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: • AR • Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium.
