HOWARD BUSHWAY EARLY AVIATION ARCHIVE Album of J. Howard Bushway, elephant folio, containing posters, letters, documents, photographs and newspaper clippings, 1912-1940s, some creasing, wear and damage throughout. INCLUDES RARE BROADSIDES ANNOUNCING APPEARANCES BY EARLY FEMALE AVIATORS. This album is a bit of a mash-up of the life and career of J. Howard Bushway (1885-1980) of Somerville, MA. Bushway's father founded the Bushway Ice Cream Company, which J. Howard later ran, but before that the younger man ran the Howard Aeroplane Company, est. 1910, representing a stable of male and female aviators appearing at barnstormings and Air Circus performances. Bushway's Wright Pusher was the first registered airplane in New England. This album opens with clippings from 1930s-1940s laid in to early leaves, followed by a story in the Los Angeles Record, October 7, 1912, reporting on the use of airplanes to photograph the great auto races. Laid in to the pages are artifacts of Bushway's life: the receipt to take the Harvard entrance test (he wound up at Dartmouth); paperwork relating to his WWI service in the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps; the bankruptcy of his brother Walter Bushway; his later career as owner of the General Ice Cream Corporation of Schenectady, NY. Far and away the most interesting material relates to his career managing flyers. Highlights include: 1. An early telegram from aviatrix Ruth Law, July 3, c.1915, asks 'Is Wright Aeroplane for sale?' 2. A printed broadside reading: 'James Howard Bushway / Business Manager / Special Feature Attraction for 1915 / by Two of America's Leading Aviators ... Capt. Chauncey Redding assisted by the Curtis Flyer, Leon D. Smith.... Somerville, MA.' Printed both sides, 3 copies. 3. Newspaper clippings about aviatrix Ruth Law; 4. A lithographic poster, 'Milwaukee's Great Curtiss-Wright Aviation Meet 3 Ring Circus ... Monster flock of World's Greatest Flyers / Flying Fish / and the sensation / Bird Girl....' 5. A TLS of Ruth Law, June 6, 1915 6. A printed poster, ... 'Little Miss Katherine Stinson / Only woman in the whole world / Looping Loop....' Bay City, Sept 6 to 11, n.y. 7. A repair receipt from the Wright Company, August 14, 1915 8. Other printed flyers for aviators Farnam Fish, Barney Oldfeld, Walter Bullock (Boy Aviator); 9. Photographs of J. Chauncey Redding, 23, including one of Redding promoting The Birth of a Nation and three of his crash. Should be viewed.
