MESMERISM. MESMER, FRANZ ANTON. 1734-1815. Contemporary manuscript treatment of Mesmer's Aphorisms, in French, including original commentary by a practitioner, 255 x 187 mm, 32 pp, ink on paper, string-bound, c.1800, one diagram in text, minor soiling. CONTEMPORARY MANUSCRIPT ON MESMER, INCLUDING A LOOSE TRANSCRIPTION OF HIS APHORISMS AS WELL AS ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE PRACTICE. The first 20 pp of this manuscript follows more or less a faithful transcription of Mesmer's Aphorisms (through Mesmer's Chapitre XII 'De L'education'), with some deviation and original commentary. Beyond that, the following 12 pages present contemporary observation and commentary in accordance with Mesmer but with much additional material, the manuscript headed 'Theorie du Procedes' at the head of p 21. On p 29, beneath the heading 'Des effets du magnetisme animal,' the author notes, in translation, 'This paragraph is the result of M. Alphonse's observations at Mesmer's house.' The embellishment of the sections on magnetizing a bottle 'Vide ou plein' show the author to have a clear understanding of the mesmeric process. Between 1777 and 1787, more books and pamphlets were published in France on Animal Magnetism than on any other subject. Even after a report for the French government by Benjamin Franklin, Antoine Lavoisier, and others attributed Mesmer's effects to 'imagination,' interest continued in both medical and lay circles. In the 1840s, surgeon James Braid would take the principles of Animal Magnetism and adapt them to psychology as hypnotism and hypnosis. These ideas would influence Charcot and Freud, among others. With roots going back to 17th-century Hermeticism and Isacc Newton, Mesmer and the philosophy of Animal Magnetism would be felt as an intellectual force for nearly 100 years after its inception. Cf.
