Babbage') to 'Mrs. Lister' inviting her to tea, 1p, 8vo (112 x 182 mm), [London], 2 May, [1839?]. Some smudging and light fading to ink, typical fold creases. BABBAGE INVITES MRS. LISTER, LATER LADY THERESA LEWIS (NEE VILLIERS), TO TEA WITH ADA LOVELACE AND MICHAEL FARADAY. Babbage had first introduced Lovelace and Faraday in 1839, but they did not see much of each other until 1843, when Lovelace sought him out to teach her practical science. 'My dear Mrs. Lister, Lady Lovelace, Faraday and a few friends are coming to drink tea with me on Wednesday the 15 May very early. If you [and the party at Kent House] can join them it will give me much pleasure. Very truly yours, C. Babbage. P.S. I enclose some cards which have escaped from their companions.' Mrs. Lister's brother was George Villiers, Earl of Clarendon. The nexus of Babbage, Faraday and Lovelace is an important one to the history of science and computing, each having made vital contributions in the field.
