CINCINNATI FIELDS THE FIRST EVER PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL TEAM. The Cincinnati Commercial. Friday, June 18, 1869. Full issue. Cincinnati: M. Hallstead & Co., 1869. Broadsheet newspaper, 8 pp, with article on Baseball on p 5. Folded, some pencil marks and light soiling to edges, 'Athaneum Library' sticker on p 1. An early report on 'Base Ball' [sic], describing the 14-5 victory of the Cincinnati Red Stockings over the Brooklyn Eckfords on June 17, 1869 in Brooklyn. The first all-salaried professional club, the Red Stockings had played the first professional game on June 1, 1869, embarking on an East Coast tour that would test the team's worth against what were generally considered the best teams in baseball, including the Eckfords. Founded as the Cincinnati Base Ball Club in 1866, the club came to be known as the Red Stockings, the first fully professional baseball team, hiring a roster of ten paid players for the 1869 season. Not surprisingly, they became a dominant force in the young sport, sweeping every game they played that year, and ending the season with a 57-0 record — the only perfect season in the history of the sport. The team would dissolve in 1870 as a number of their stars defected to the Boston Braves (forerunner of the modern Atlanta Braves), but the Red Stockings name was revived twice in Cincinnati, with the third iteration of the team joining the National League in 1890 and adopting the shortened name 'Reds.' They remain in the National League of the MLB to this day. A RARE ACCOUNT OF ONE OF THE FIRST PROFESSIONAL BASE BALL GAMES ON RECORD.
