Folio (344 x 273 mm). 76 hand-colored engraved plates by Alexander Lawson, G. Murray, Benjamin Tanner and J. G. Warnicke, from original drawings by Wilson, with multiple figures on plates. List of subscribers in volume 9. Contemporary half roan and marbled boards. Most covers detached, joints cracked and spines chipped, in need of re-binding, heavy offsetting from plates throughout, scattered foxing and browning. Provenance: Mathurin G. Gibbs (ink ownership inscriptions on title pages). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST COLOR-PLATE AMERICAN BIRD BOOK PUBLISHED IN AMERICA. Wilson, the father of American ornithology, produced his seminal study — the result of years of fieldwork — more than a decade before Audubon's appeared. The owner whose signature appears on the title pages may have been South Carolina plantation owner Mathurin Guerin Gibbs (1787-1849), but he does not appear on the list of subscribers. Buyers' Premium and Charges
