JEFFERSON OFFERS GIDEON GRANGER THE POSITION OF POSTMASTER-GENERAL. Autograph Letter Signed as President ('Th Jefferson') extending the position of Postmaster General to Gideon Granger, a staunch Republican and Jefferson intimate, 248 x 204 mm, 1 p, ink on paper, Washington, October 14, 1801, 'Gideon Granger esq' at lower margin in Jefferson's hand, docketed to verso, 'T. Jefferson, Oct 14, 1801.' AN IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT TO A MAJOR GOVERNMENT POSITION, GRANGER WOULD BE THE LONGEST SERVING POSTMASTER IN AMERICAN HISTORY, as well as a continuing conduit of information to the President. Granger's appointment gave Jefferson a major Republican ally in the north, and Granger's service included numerous examples of his confidential reporting of information to Jefferson, detailed in a March 9, 1814 letter from Jefferson to Granger. In 1803-4, Granger secretly infiltrated a Burr-led plot to form a coalition of the Eastern states to overwhelm the Union. And, again, it was Granger in 1806 who gave Jefferson more 'a specific view of the objects of this new conspiracy' as Burr plotted his attempt to carve out the Western states. In his epic The History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, historian Henry Adams states, 'The most active politician was Gideon Granger, the Postmaster General, whose 'intimacy with some of those in the secret,' as Jefferson afterward testified, gave him 'opportunities of searching into their proceedings.' Every day during this period, Granger made a confidential report to the president.' Granger served from 1801 to 1814, under both Jefferson and Madison, the longest serving postmaster-general in American history. He initially tried to turn down the position, citing family concerns in a series of letters to Jefferson over 3 days, before finally accepting the position on October 27, 1800 at the urging of Pierpont Edwards as it would 'give aid to the cause.' Autograph letters from Jefferson relating to major government appointments during his administration are exceedingly rare.
