Rebacked, retaining original spine laid down, covers rubbed, some tearing to cloth at corners, ink gift inscription on front free endpaper, a few handling creases, light browning around page edges. FIRST EDITION. Kneeland was a professor of zoology and physiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who '... took pains to get reliable information and present it with more than ordinary care.' (Farquhar). John Soule is credited on the title page as the photographer, but he probably purchased the negatives, most likely from Martin Mason Hazeltine.
