AN ENGLISH INFANTRY OFFICER'S HANGER, c. 1770s. The iron hilt with slotted guard and tapering knuckle bow connecting to an ovoid pommel and replaced carved oak grip; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and single narrow fuller, both sides of the blade marked with 'H' on a running fox. Blade lg. 28 1/8, overall lg. 31 7/8 in. Condition: Hilt and blade have traces of old black paint and underlying light to moderate pitting; the counter-guard has a pronounced bend and the knuckle bow is wavy, grip is replaced; blade has areas of surface oxidation and tip is blunt.
