A RARE RICHARD WILSON NEW JERSEY CONTRACT MUSKET, third quarter of the 18th century. 41 7/8 in., .80 caliber barrel with ring decoration at the breech, London Gunmakers Company proof marks, asterisk over 'RW' barrel maker's mark and the top of the barrel engraved 'LONDON'; lock with double line border engraving may be a period replacement; walnut stock with raised plateau around the breech plug tang; brass furniture including a butt plate with stepped tang engraved 'NEW=JERSEY', trigger guard with pointed finial, convex side plate with long tail, sheet brass nose band, two cast brass rammer pipes and a sheet brass entry pipe, steel rammer with button head and plain end. Overall lg. 58 in. Condition: Barrel toned to brown with pitting at the vent; lock toned to brown; stock likely has repair through the lock area and the butt is coated in a tinted varnish, action functions properly.
