Eileen Agar (British, 1899-1991) The Queen of Time inscribed 'FOR/EDOUARD/AND/SYBIL/XMAS NEW YEAR' (on the interior of the accompanying envelope); further inscribed and dated twice '1942 1943/BEST WISHES FROM/EILEEN AND/JOSEPH' (on the exterior of the accompanying envelope) collage and mixed media on coloured paper, with an accompanying envelope 16.7 x 21.1 cm. (6 5/8 x 8 3/8 in.) (unframed) (2) Footnotes: Provenance The Artist, by whom gifted to E.L.T. Mesens With Mayor Gallery, London, 1990s, where acquired by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. Eileen Agar habitually crafted compositions such as this for friends on personal occasions such as birthdays, Christmas and New year wishes. The present example was sent to Edouard and Sybil Mesens. Mesens was the leader of the Surrealist Group in England (also see lot 11). Such items are seen as precious documents, telling about the relationships between artists. Joseph Bard had married Eileen Agar in 1940 after living with her since 1926. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
