A George III mahogany commode of generous proportions Circa 1765 Of rectilinear form, the top with an ovolo moulded edge, above a mahogany brushing slide, over four long graduated oak lined drawers, on shaped bracket feet, 126cm wide x 59cm deep x 97cm high, (49 1/2in wide x 23in deep x 38in high) Footnotes: The excellent quality of the mahogany timber used, combined with the presence of red wash to the underside and characteristic elegant swan neck handle mounts, prove that the offered lot was clearly made in a leading workshop of the period. In fact it seems almost certain that the present commode was produced by a cabinet maker operating at that time, circa 1765, on or very near to the historic St. Martin's Lane in London. At that time the vast majority of such firms, which were producing fashionable furniture to the highest possible standard largely, but not exclusively, for a wealthy and noble clientele, were located on St. Martin's Lane (or at least within its immediate environs). Aside from Chippendale, it is recorded that makers and 'upholsterers' as prominent and historically important as William Hallett, John Channon, William and John Linnell, William Vile and John Cobb, Benjamin Goodison and James Paine had their businesses located in this area of the city. Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
