Initially, Lord Elgin intended to visit Athens with a team of artists to sketch, paint, and create molds of the sculptures and monuments. His goal was to bring these reproductions to England as inspiration for British architects and artists. However, despite criticism he later altered his plan and subsequently transported more than half of the actual Parthenon sculptures to England where they were subsequently purchased by the British government in 1816.
