Edward Henry Bostock, born in 1858, was the son of James Bostock and Emma Wombwell, who founded the renowned Bostock and Wombwell circus dynasty. Throughout his career, Bostock expanded his influence across various forms of entertainment, establishing businesses in zoos, circuses, hippodromes, music halls, and even motion pictures. Bostock relates his circus adventures in his book 'Menageries, Circuses and Theatres', published in 1927. He retired in 1932 at the age of 74, and his menagerie was subsequently acquired by the London Zoo. Featured in this painting, Cecil the lion was one of the iconic members of the Bostock and Wombwell menagerie.
