After Baron Carlo (Charles) Marochetti (French, 1805-1867):A patinated bronze equestrian figure of Prince Albert (German, 1819-1861) Cast by Elkington & Co Ltd The sitter clad in regimental uniform, with tied sash and military order, holding a cockaded bicorn hat, his steed with raised front right leg, on naturalistic canted base, and integral moulded shallow plinth, inscribed ELKINGTON & CO LIMITED foundry mark, 52cm high, 46cm wide, 19.5cm deep Footnotes: The bronze effigy represents the model for a marble monument dedicated to Prince Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emanuel of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the Prince Consort (d. 1861). This monument served as the centerpiece of Queen Victoria's granite mausoleum, designed by the Prince's former art adviser, Ludwig Gruner (d. 1882). The mausoleum was erected under Queen Victoria's direction at Frogmore House, Windsor, between 1862 and 1871. The effigy, created alongside one intended for the Queen (d. 1901), was sculpted by Baron Carlo Marochetti (d. 1867), a Turin-born court sculptor who established a studio in London in 1848. This particular bronze was cast by the Birmingham-based foundry established by George Richards Elkington and his cousin, Henry Elkington. The Elkington firm also produced a bronze casting of Marochetti's model for the Prince Consort's statue in Glasgow.
