A walnut 'throne' chair in the Italian Renaissance revival style after the model by Luigi Frullini With two shaped, scrolled and overlapping disc carved sides, each side surmounted by an arm support in the form of a recumbent griffin, with a central lion mask roundel, each scrolled stile surmounted by a carved ram's mask finial, the front legs terminating in hairy cloven hoof feet, the other terminals carved with lappeted rosettes, approximately: 78cm wide x 111cm deep x 121cm high, (30 1/2in wide x 43 1/2in deep x 47 1/2in high) Footnotes: The original 19th century model of 'throne' chair upon which the present 20th century chair is based, or from which it is derived, was made by Luigi Frullini (1839-1897). It appears illustrated in E. Colle, Il Mobile dell'Ottocento in Italia, 2007, Milan, fig. 91, p. 406. Another pair of 'throne' chairs, albeit period ones attributed to Frullini, which are also comparable, sold Christie's, London, 24 May 2018, The Collector, lot 666. Frullini was arguably the most renowned cabinet maker who worked principally in the Italian Renaissance style, which enjoyed widespread revival during the second half of the 19th century. He is even referred to as the 'Donatello of Wood Carvers' in an article entitled 'Luigi Frullini' by H. Zimmerman, The Magazine of Art, 1898, p. 279. This type of furniture represents the rebirth of interest in and enthusiasm for the fine and decorative arts produced during the Renaissance period. In addition, works such as this are testament to Frullini's skill in executing elaborate designs through his impressive abilities as a wood carver.
