Born in Florence, Lapini became one of the leading marble sculptors of his generation and his studio produced numerous allegorical and genre subjects, portrait busts and works after the antique. These were sold with great success alongside works by his contemporaries in his gallery in Florence to travellers on the Grand Tour, which by the late 19th century included the newly emerging wealthy middle classes of Britain, Germany, Russia, France and America. Lapini exhibited a number of sculptures at the 'Esposizione Generale Italiana di Torino' in 1884, including 'Sorpressa' and 'Il primo bacio' and also at Rome in 1888.
