A George III mahogany triple chairback seat or the 'Rout Settee' Circa 1770, purportedly housed in the Bath Assembly Rooms during the period: 1771-1899 The 'Chinese' fretwork splats surmounted by arched toprails with re-entrant angles, with square section arms and X-frame end supports, on square section legs with H-stretchers, the centre of the toprail mounted with a brass plaque engraved: 'ROUT SETTEE from the BATH ASSEMBLY ROOMS, 1771-1899', approximately: 186cm wide x 46cm deep x 77.5cm high, (73in wide x 18in deep x 30 1/2in high) Footnotes: Provenance The engraved brass plaque applied to the centre of the toprail claims that the offered lot was formerly, or perhaps more specifically, originally housed in the Bath Assembly Rooms between the years 1771 and 1899. The engraving also refers to this as the 'Rout Settee', although the reason for this is not clear. The present settee was subsequently owned by the Scrimgeour family who resided at Stedham Hall, Midhurst, in West Sussex. Evidently it thence passed by descent to the current owner and vendor.
