Zobel was one of the key proponents of this unusual painting technique. His method involves building up an image using coloured sand which was then fixed into place. Initially employed as a table decorator or'table decker', Zobel found fame after producing an image in unfixed sand, sugar and marble dust at a dinner party held for George III at Windsor Castle. This decoration proved popular enough for Zobel to receive numerous commissions and he later developed the means by which to fix the images in place.
