William Theed the Younger (British, 1804-1891): A carved white marble portrait bust of a gentleman believed to be William Clifford. the sitter looking slightly to dexter, his shoulders clad in drapery, signed and dated W.THEED. SC LONDON 1851 to the rear, on turned and waisted moulded circular socle, together with a 19th century veined pink marble column pedestal of plain form on moulded socle and shallow square plinth, 76cm high, 51cm wide, 31cm deep overall, the pedestal 109cm high, 36cm x 36cm (2) Footnotes: William Morgan Clifford (1760-1814) had two sons, Morgan Morgan Clifford and William Morgan Clifford, who never married and died in 1850. Theed shows a sculpture, a posthumous bust of William Clifford in 1852 at the Royal Academy of Arts. William Morgan Clifford's estate passes to his nephew Henry Clifford, who later moves to Torquay. In 1884 Henry Clifford dies, and leaves his estate to his daughter, who is married to Hon James Fitzwaller Butler. The estates go to their daughter Lady Marion Dunboyne, who in turn passes everything on to her grandson Arthur Malcolm Peters. In 1945 Oct 6th by direction of Honourable Mrs Peters, a sale at the Lower Ballroom, Rougemont Hotel, Exeter, under the direction of Messers Rickeard, Green and Michelmore where a Dick Gorman bought the bust. Thence by descent to the vendor. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
