ADMIRAL JERVIS (JOHN, 1st EARL ST. VINCENT) INTEREST: a George III silver wine coaster and a collection of silver flatware coaster William Allen III, London 1800 Circular form, gadrooned rim with pierced floral and scrolling foliate sides, engraved with a crest encircled by a garter ribbon containing the motto of the Order of the Bath, for Admiral John Jervis 1st Earl of St Vincent to the silver centre, underside with wood base, diameter 14cm; with a George III set of six silver Old English bead edge pattern teaspoons, an Old English pattern sauce ladle and a small sifter spoon, Richard Crossley, London 1800; a silver thread edge handled carving fork and knife, Moses Brent, London 1800, with steel tines and blade, stamped MAKEPIECE; together with another silver sifter spoon, Richard Crossley, London 1783, each engraved with a crest encircled by a garter ribbon containing the motto of the Order of the Bath 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO'. (12) Footnotes: Admiral of the Fleet John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent GCB, PC (9 January 1735 – 13 March 1823) was a British Royal Navy officer, politician and peer. He was created in 1797 Earl St Vincent in the Peerage of Great Britain and in 1801 Viscount St Vincent in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. In 1782 he had been awarded the Knight of the Bath and in 1815 Knight Grand Cross of the Bath. Admiral John Jervis entered the Navy as an able seaman in 1749. After serving on board the 'Foudroyant' as Lieutenant, he took command of her in 1775. He was elevated to Earl St Vincent following his defeat of the Spanish Fleet off St Vincent in 1797, the same action where Nelson made his memorable attack on the San Josef. Provenance: Admiral John Jervis, 1st Earl St Vincent (1735-1823); by descent to Honora Mary Jervis and her husband Colonel E.H.B. Lysons; then to J.M.C. Lysons (1924-2018) and the present owners. Buyers' Premium and Charges
