Herbert Gustave Schmalz (British, 1856-1935) Portrait of Ethel Tweedie (1862-1940) signed and dated 'Herbert Schamlz. 1894.' (upper right) oil on canvas 63.5 x 50.8cm (25 x 20in). Footnotes: Ethel Brilliana Tweedie was a well known and prolific author, travel writer and biographer. She married Mr Alexander (Alec) Tweedie in 1887 and wrote under her married name. The couple travelled extensively, notably throughout Scandinavia which formed the subject for Tweedie's earliest and perhaps most well know works A Girl's Ride in Iceland (1889) and A Winter Jaunt to Norway (1894). Following her husband's sudden death in 1896, she contributed to numerous newspapers and periodicals, continuing her travels and documenting her experiences in diverse countries including Mexico, China, Japan, and Russia. Mrs Tweedie passed away in London in 1940 at the age of 78. Notably, a copy of the present lot was featured as the frontispiece in her published work A Girl's Ride in Iceland (1894).
