Edward Lear (British, 1812-1888) Three self-caricatures by Edward Lear drawn on incomplete autograph letters, comprising: i) Self-caricature of Lear wearing a wide-brimmed hat, bent double and leaning on a walking stick in order to water a flower, captioned '...Last portrait of Mr Lear, a watering of his flowers – (from a photograph)...', beneath autograph subscription ('Ever your affect friend/ Edward Lear'), the remains of letter on verso referring to his servant George who '...believes the English can't exist without certain Xmas food – actually from me a whole Turkey!!! – and a round plum pudding!!!!!! The former... will last hot, cold, fried, grilled, hashed, curried and what not, for at least a fortnight: the latter for no end of time – as I only eat an inch a day...', 2 pages, drawing in pen and ink on the lower part of a letter torn from larger sheet, dust-staining, creased at horizontal folds, one small nick not affecting text, oblong 8to (110 x 134mm.), [seemingly Christmastime] ii) Self-caricature of Lear holding a watering can in each hand, out of which water pours, intended in place of a signature, on the last page of an autograph letter ending by saying he will not visit England for long but imagines he will go to Godalming, one page, pen and ink, dust-staining, creased with some small tears and pin holes at folds, one small hole over 'I', 8to (200 x 134mm.), [probably Italy, undated] iii) Self-caricature of Lear wearing a wide-brimmed hat, brandishing a whip and riding a running elephant, captioned '...I will now tell you what has happened to me. Can you guess at all by this picture?...', the rest of the letter urging the recipient to write soon, text on verso recalling cryptically '...something 'very particular' that has happened to E.L. – I ain't swallowed a spider... nor a bluebottle fly: & I ain't married, & ain't likely to:- & nobody has gone & left me 10,000£...', 2 pages, drawing in pen and ink on the lower part of a letter torn from a larger sheet, dust-staining, creased, folded, small tears and holes, edges frayed, small loss upper edge, oblong 8vo (104 x 134mm.), [probably India, undated] (3) Footnotes: 'I AIN'T SWALLOWED A SPIDER...
