A Louis XV ormolu mounted kingwood, purplewood, tulipwood and bois satine marquetry table à écrire In the manner of Bernard II Van Risenburgh, known as BVRB The shaped top inlaid with S- and C-scrolls, and scrolling foliage, above a pull-out writing slide mounted with a Moroccan leather surface, the right side fitted with a single drawer enclosing two glass inkwells, on slender cabriole legs, some gilt bronze mounts probably later, 63cm wide x 42cm deep x 69.5cm high, (25in wide x 16 1/2in deep x 27in high) Footnotes: The above lot is similar to a group of tables either stamped or attributed to BVRB which all differ slightly in design features. They fall into two distinct categories: firstly, those with a fixed top and a drawer fitted with an inkwell which were intended for use as writing tables such as this one, and those with a hinged top. This table is very similar to a table à écrire stamped BVRB and JME in both size and design which was sold by De Baecque in Lyon on 28th November 2020, lot 73 and another comparable table à écrire can be seen at the Cognacq-Jay museum in Paris (inv. J370). Bernard Van Risenburgh (died circa 1765) known as BVRB was one of the most accomplished ébénistes of the Louis XV period and established a workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. BVRB mastered the technique of bois de bout end-cut marquetry of floral design. Photographed in the drawing room at Stobhall for Country Life in 1962. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TP TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Please refer to the catalogue for further information. For all other auctions: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Please note transfer and storage charges will apply to any lots not collected after 14 calendar days from the auction date.
