A 19th century 72nd Regiment of Foot (The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) dirk J. B Johnstone London & Dublin With bright tapering single-edged blade notched along the back, one side etched with a crown, thistles, battle honours on scrolls, and 72 Highlanders, and on the other with crowned VR cypher, the hardwood baluster grip carved with basket weave and set with studs, the basal mount engraved with thistles, the pommel similarly engraved and set with a faceted cut glass, in original wood-lined leather scabbard with engraved mounts, the locket engraved with 72 surrounded by thistles, with bi-knife and fork ensuite, the blade: 29.5cm long Footnotes: The 72nd Regiment of Foot (The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) was established in 1778 in response to the British Army's need for more troops for the American War of Independence (1775-83). Kenneth Mackenzie, Earl of Seaforth, recruited from the western Highlands of Scotland and the regiment travelled as far afield as India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Mauritius and Canada. In 1823 the regiment was re-named after Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany who was the commander-in-chief of the British Army and King George IV's brother.
