Nolin, 1708--ORTELIUS (ABRAHAM) Scotiae Tabula, engraved double-page hand-coloured map, Latin text on verso, centre fold reinforced on verso, light toning and marginal soiling, image 345 x 470mm., sheet 470 x 565mm., c.1590--CHATELAIN (HENRI ABRAHAM) Carte Pour Donner Une Idee Generale Du Gouvernement D'Ecosse... [Scottish Parliament], double-page engraving, image 370 x 460mm., window mounted, framed and glazed, Amsterdam, c.1720--ADAIR (JOHN) AND JAMES MOXON ( engraver) The mapp of Straithern, Stormount and cars of Gourie, with the rivers Tay and Jern, engraved map with outline in colour, faint toning, image 460 x 675mm., sheet 510 x 735mm., framed and glazed, c.1720 (4) Footnotes: A GLIMPSE INTO SCOTLAND'S RICH HISTORIAL AND CARTOGRAPHIC HERITAGE. The first item is an engraving after the manuscript version of John Adair's map from his original survey of 1683, today in the National Library of Scotland (Adv.MS.70.2.11 (Adair 2)). The second item is an engraved hand-coloured map of Scotland from Ortelius Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in Antwerp in 1574. The map is based on Gerard Mercator's eight-sheet wall map of the British Isles from 1564. The third item is an engraving from Henri Chatelain's monumental Atlas Historique. This richly detailed engraving depicts a series of scenes illustrating the activities and key figures of the Scottish Parliament. With over 30 individuals and groups identified, the engraving is both informative and decorative, capturing the intricacies of Scottish political life with remarkable precision. The fourth item is a scarce example of the Nolin-Coronelli map of Scotland, first issued around 1689 but printed here in 1708. Originally published by the Venetian cartographer Vicenzo Maria Coronelli, this large and impressive map was later reissued in Paris by Nolin, with French titles and dedications. It features a dedication to James Francis Stuart (1688-1766), known to history as the 'Old Pretender.' The map reflects the Jacobite claim to the throne, with James listed as 'Jacques III Roi,' despite the fact that no such monarch officially ruled England or Scotland. This map provides a poignant reminder of the failed Jacobite uprisings and the enduring legacy of the Stuart cause.
