A 15th/16th century English carved oak fragment depicting Saint John The figure standing beneath tied back curtains surmounted by an undulating canopy holding a book in one hand and the remains of a pen in the other (signifying the Gospel of John) with an eagle placed by his feet, standing on a plinth base carved S JOHN, with traces of gesso and most likely previously polychrome decorated, 33cm wide, 11cm deep, 77cm high (12 1/2in wide, 4in deep, 30in high) Footnotes: Provenance Christie's Centenary Fund of St John and St Elizabeth, 6 November 1956, lot 80, presented by S&F Wolsey. The eagle positioned at the feet of Saint John holds profound symbolism in Christian iconography. It symbolises elevated spiritual insight and soaring intellect and is regularly associated with John. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
