M. le Pelley Fontney, Léon-Augustin Lhermitte, Catalogue Raisonné (Paris, 1991), no. 567, ill. p. 258 (Location Unknown). Exhibited Paris, Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, 1911, no. 87. N.B. Léon Augustin Lhermitte was born in rural northern France, and throughout his career this setting remained his biggest inspiration. He is best known for his scenes of peasant life and rural labor, and was particularly admired for his mastery of pastels. His innovative use of this medium placed his work at the crossroads of tradition and modernity in French realism and earned him an immense following. Upon receiving his own Lhermitte pastel, Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother in 1885 that 'it is certain that for years I have not seen anything as beautiful as this scene by Lhermitte. I am too preoccupied by Lhermitte this evening to be able to talk of other things.' The present work depicts a ferryman helping a man, a woman, and two small children cross a river to the village on the other side. The river may be the Aisne, which runs through the region where Lhermitte grew up. The work exemplifies Lhermitte's skillful use of pastels. He delicately and skillfully depicts the light, textures, and colors of the scene, from the reflection of the village on the water to the heavy lines of the figures' clothes to the sun-dappled trees. This pastel echoes van Gogh's thoughts when he wrote that '[Lhermitte] is the absolute master of the figure, proceeding neither from the color nor the local tone but rather from the light – as Rembrandt did...There is an astonishing mastery in everything he does...When I think about Millet or Lhermitte, I think modern art is as powerful as the work of Michelangelo or Rembrandt'.
