Narcisse Virgilio Díaz de la Peña (French, 1807-1876) Les Enfants à l'Aigle, 1835-40 signed 'N. Diaz' (lower left); identified on two typed labels (affixed to the backing board and frame reverse) oil on paper laid down to board 24.0 x 31.5 cm (9 7/16 x 12 3/8 in). framed 42.5 x 50.0 x 5.0 cm (16 3/4 x 19 11/16 x 1 15/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance Hôtel Drouot, Paris, February 25, 1865, no. 15. Galerie de Fleuve, Paris. Sotheby's, London, June 22, 1983, no. 187. Sotheby's, London, March 23, 1984, no. 66. Narcisse Virgilio Díaz de la Peña was born in Bordeaux and orphaned by age 10, after which he lived with family friends near Sèvres. At age 15 he began working in the Sèvres porcelain factory, an experience which instilled in him an interest in Oriental figures and themes that manifests in his very early work. By the 1830s he was living and working near the Fontainebleau Forest in Barbizon; he produced many paintings of the surrounding woods and landscape, all of which reveal Díaz's admiration for and close study of the work of Théodore Rousseau. The present work was likely painted during Díaz's time in Fontainebleu.
