At age 15 he began working in the Sèvres porcelain factory, an experience which instilled in him an interest in Oriental figures and themes that manifests in his very early work. By the 1830s he was living and working near the Fontainebleau Forest in Barbizon; he produced many paintings of the surrounding woods and landscape, all of which reveal Díaz's admiration for and close study of the work of Théodore Rousseau. The present work was likely painted during Díaz's time in Fontainebleu.
