Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, France Born in Linköping, Sweden, in 1837, Adolf Gotthard Werner studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1857 to 1861, receiving the Meyerska Medal in 1859. He continued his artistic training in Antwerp and Paris under Émile Signol (1804-1892), and later at the Düsseldorf Academy, known for its academic rigor and emphasis on narrative painting. After extensive travels through France, Spain, and Italy, Werner settled permanently in Rome in 1869, where he became part of the expatriate artist community. Werner's work is marked by precise draftsmanship, detailed settings, and a strong sense of narrative, often rooted in mythological, allegorical, or moral subjects. Le Rêve brisé is a representative example of his mature style, depicting a young shepherd resting beside a broken vase, with mythological figures such as Cupid, Sappho, Euterpe, and Bacchus evoking themes of love, loss, and artistic inspiration. The composition combines classical references with a restrained emotional tone, reflecting the influence of both the Düsseldorf tradition and the Northern European artistic milieu active in Rome during the late 19th century.
