Doré/ 1868' (lower right) black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash, heightened with white on paper 63.5 x 45.5cm (25 x 17 15/16in). Footnotes: Provenance M. Paul Touzet Collection (according to the exhibition catalogue 1932) Sale, Tajan, Paris, 25 March 2002, lot 237 Private Collection, France Literature H. Leblanc, Catalogue de l'oeuvre complet de Gustave Doré : illustrations, peintures, dessins, sculptures, eaux-fortes, lithographies : avec un portrait et 29 illustrations documentaires, 1931, p. 342, no 122. Exhibited Palais des Beaux-Arts de la ville de Paris (Petit Palais), Gustave Doré 1832-1883, 1932, p. 21, no 94 This intimate and sensitively rendered drawing was likely executed during Gustave Doré's journey to Spain in 1861, undertaken in the company of his friend and writer Jean-Charles Davillier. The two travelled extensively through the country, documenting their observations in what would become L'Espagne (see L'Espagne par le Baron Ch. Davillier, illustrée de 309 gravures dessinées sur bois par Gustave Doré, Paris, 1874, p. 133), a richly illustrated travelogue that combined Doré's incisive drawings with Davillier's descriptive text. The present drawing reflects Doré's fascination with the everyday life and customs of Spain, particularly among its Romani communities. Unlike the more theatrical or romanticised depictions often favoured by Orientalist painters of the period, Doré's drawing stands out for its naturalism and quiet dignity. The subject, absorbed in a private act of self-care, is portrayed with subtle empathy, free from caricature or sentimentality. Doré's Spanish journey marked a significant moment in his career, offering a counterpoint to his more monumental illustrative work and allowing him to explore a direct, observational mode of draftsmanship. This sheet is a compelling example of that personal engagement, imbued with the immediacy of travel and the artist's keen eye for human presence.
