Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, France A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under François-Édouard Picot (1786–1868) and Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889), Guillaume-Charles Brun debuted at the Paris Salon in 1851. He became known for his genre scenes and Orientalist works, particularly those depicting everyday life in North Africa, such as in Algeria and the city of Constantine, as seen in the present painting.
