John Melhuish Strudwick (British, 1849-1937) A female head study pencil on buff paper 23 x 18cm (9 1/16 x 7 1/16in). Footnotes: Provenance Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Belgravia, 23 April 1974, lot 395. Strudwick showed an early talent for drawing and having studied at the National Art Training School in South Kensington, enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools in 1868. After a period working in the studios of both John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, he outgrew his role as assistant and gained praise as an artist in his own right. Taking influence from both the Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic movements, he exhibited at the Royal Academy as well as the Grosvenor Gallery and New Gallery.
