CHINESE SCHOOL (CIRCA 1845) View of the Residence of Alexander Johnston, Hong Kong Oil on canvas, carved and gilt wood frame. 29.5cm (11 5/8in) high x 40cm (15 3/4in) wide Footnotes: 中國畫派 約一八四五年 香港莊士敦居所圖 布面油畫 木雕漆金框 Provenance: Wattis Fine Art, Hong Kong, 2014 Exhibited: Wattis Fine Art, Early views of Hong Kong: original paintings and prints, including the Chater Collection, a Further Chapter, Hong Kong, 2014. Located on Battery Path just above Queen's Road, the site for this building was acquired by the first Administrator of Hong Kong, Alexander Johnston. The mansion was built in 1843 and was the residence of the first Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Henry Pottinger. It was offered for sale to the government but they failed to agree with the excessive valuation of $13,000. The house was ultimately sold to Augustine Heard and Company and was significantly remodelled in the 1870s and 1880s. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
