A sealed 'Onion' wine bottle, circa 1700-20 Of dark olive-green tint, the bulbous body with rounded shoulders, the short tapering neck with an applied string rim, applied on the shoulder with a circular seal bearing the initials 'C C' addorsed and interlinked, surmounted by an earl's coronet and within a lined border, a deep 'kick-up' to the base, 14.5cm high Footnotes: Provenance With Jonathan Horne Antiques Graham Slater Collection Literature David Burton, Antique Sealed Bottles (2015), p.1086 The initials 'C C' probably relate to Cornbury and Clarendon, and the seal can be attributed to Henry Hyde, the Lord Canonbury and 2nd Earl of Clarendon (1638-1709), who was the brother of Anne Hyde, the first wife of King James II and mother of Queen Mary and Queen Anne. Detached seals have been found at his family home at Cornbury Park, north of Oxford. Another bottle with this seal was sold by Bonhams on 16 December 2009, lot 14.
