An uncommonly small English delftware fruit charger, circa 1660 Probably Southwark, painted with three oranges or pomegranates, resting on a bed of green leaves edged in manganese, a green, blue and ochre 'whirl' at the centre, a yellow and blue banded rim, with a lead-glazed back, 23.5cm diam Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection Graham Slater purchased this diminutive charger in 1998 in an excavated state. The seller noted that it had been dug-up on the foreshore of the Thames at Trig Lane. The Southwark pottery of Pickleherring Quay was located just across the river from this site, the south bank becoming more densely populated by small factories producing delftware as the 17th century continued. It is interesting to compare the present lot with the larger fruit charger in the Museum of London illustrated by Frank Britton and attributed to Southwark, mid-17th century, see London Delftware (1986), item 39, colour plate F.
