An interesting Frechen bellarmine, dated 1660 Of ovoid shape with neck cordons, the strap handle now lacking, moulded with a grimacing bearded mask to the neck, a small oval medallion to the front bearing an inverted anchor and initials 'P V A' beneath the date '1660', among rosettes and flowers, 20.8cm high Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection The medallion bears the emblem and initials of Pieter van den Ancker, a stoneware dealer from Dordrecht who came to London in 1654 to trade in Frechen stoneware bottles and Rhenish and French wines. See David Gaimster, German Stoneware 1200-1900 (1997), fig.70 for another bottle with similar initials and anchor rebus, in the Museum of London and found in London.
