A very rare Brislington delftware baluster vase, circa 1680-90 Of baluster form with a spreading ridged foot and short neck, painted in shades of blue with a continuous chinoiserie landscape with two standing Chinese figures, stylised rockwork and plants, the base with a formal border of stylised leaves, 18.8cm high Footnotes: Provenance With Jonathan Horne, 1998 Graham Slater Collection The shape of this vase is unusual in 17th century English delftware as it ultimately has its origins in Chinese porcelain, albeit perhaps via Dutch Delft. A London armorial drug jar of very similar shape and date, bearing the arms of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries above the coat of arms of the City of London, is illustrated by Ross Taggart, The Burnap Collection of English Pottery (1967), p.46, no.91. Compare also to the London vase illustrated by John Austin, British Delft at Williamsburg (1994), p.252, no.603 and the bleu persan example also from the Graham Slater Collection, see Bonhams, 15 April 2025, lot 77, illustrated by Michael Archer and Brian Morgan, Fair as China Dishes (1977), p.44, no.22. The two Chinese figures closely resemble those on a group of Brislington posset pots from the Glaisher Collection, illustrated and discussed in detail by Michael Archer, 'Delftware Chinoiserie at Brislington', ECC Trans, Vol.19, Pt.3 (2007), pp.523-6, figs.34-36, and the greenish-blue glaze would support this attribution.
