A London delftware bleeding bowl or porringer, circa 1680-1700 The rounded bowl with a slightly everted rim and applied with a flat lobed handle pierced with a heart-shaped aperture, decorated with alternating blue and manganese blotches, 15.8cm wide including handle Footnotes: Provenance Newbury Collection, 1983 Graham Slater Collection A very similar bleeding bowl was sold by Bonhams on 5 December 2007, lot 86. Another related example with a slightly different handle form from the Rous Lench Collection was sold by Sotheby's on 1 July 1986, lot 11. Delftware with blotched decoration has been excavated at various London sites, a few fragments also found in Belfast. References to 'Blood porringers' in the delftware accounts supplied in 1699 by the Pickleherring pottery presumably describe such objects but it is possible these were intended for a range of uses. Contemporary examples in pewter or silver follow a very similar profile especially the flat, pierced handle shapes. See the Charles II silver bleeding bowl, dated 1681, sold by Bonhams on 13 November 2007, lot 364.
