An exceptionally rare London delftware small flower vase, circa 1660-80 Perhaps Southwark, of ovoid shape on a spreading circular foot, two nozzles alternating with twisted spurs or scrolls applied below the wavy rim, painted in blue with a Chinese figure in an oriental landscape with rockwork and grasses, 10.4cm high Footnotes: Provenance With Jonathan Horne With Sampson and Horne Graham Slater Collection Flower vases of this distinctive shape were produced in delftware throughout the second half of the 17th century, almost all of which have three nozzles alternating with three twisted spurs. The earliest examples were typically undecorated or sparsely decorated. Two examples dated 1650 and 1683 respectively are illustrated by Michael Archer, Delftware (2013), p.302, nos.I1 and I2. Three further examples are illustrated by John Austin, British Delft at Williamsburg (1994), pp.250-1, nos.599-601. Two of these have comparable decoration to the present lot, one of which is also of the same rare form with two nozzles and twisted spurs, no.600.
