A very rare English delftware basket, circa 1740 Possibly Vauxhall, of circular form, the waisted sides elaborately pierced, the centre painted in blue with an intricate Chinese landscape featuring tall pagodas and rocky outcrops, a fisherman crossing a bridge and birds soaring above, the border painted with tiny sprigs and stars between geometric bands, the underside with evidence of three bun feet now lacking, 23.3cm diam Footnotes: Provenance With Aurea Carter, 1985 Graham Slater Collection Dennis Cockell discusses and illustrates this basket in his ECC paper, Some Delftware Baskets, Vol.13, Pt.2 (1988), pl.83.b and 84.a. Two related baskets with ropetwist handles and three bun feet are also discussed and Cockell compares these to shards he had excavated at Vauxhall Cross. A basket with 'tumbling birds' above recumbent deer in the Liane Richards Collection was sold by Bonhams on 13 April 2016, lot 28. Sherds with these birds, sometimes called 'Ming Birds' have been excavated at various factory sites, including Bristol (Temple Back), Liverpool, Vauxhall, and Lambeth. See Roger Massey, English delftware and the influence of Chinese blue and white porcelain, 1730-50, ECC Trans, Vol.31 (2020), pp.40-41. The piercing on the present lot varies from the other examples mentioned above and would appear to be unique.
