A rare London delftware bowl, circa 1755 Probably Lambeth (William or Abigail Griffith), the exterior painted in blue, yellow and manganese with a chinoiserie coastal landscape with a house by the waterside, two boats and two figures conversing before rockwork, the interior inscribed 'Success to the British Arms' with a paraph below, a formal bianco-sopra-bianco border below the interior rim, the rim edged in yellow, 26.5cm diam Footnotes: Provenance Anthony Belton Collection Graham Slater Collection A very similar bowl is illustrated by Michael Archer, Delftware (1997), p.159, no.B82 where several other bowls bearing the same inscription are cited. Archer noted at the time of publication that the bianco-sopra-bianco decoration on the example in the Victoria and Albert Museum, which is identical to that on the present lot, appeared to be unique. A further identical bowl was in the Rous Lench Collection, 1 July 1986, lot 50. Three bowls with the same design but different inscriptions, all dated 1755, are illustrated by Lipski and Archer, Dated English Delftware (1984), nos.1156, 1157 and 1159. A number of related bowls dated 1755 and related fragments were excavated by Garner at Lambeth.
